Vincent Van Gogh was born in the Netherlands, 1853 - 1890. He did not embark upon a career as an artist until 1880. He was supported by his brother Theo who submitted many of his works to the Salon Des Independants in France. Most of his best known works were produced in the final two years of his life.
Café Terrace at Night, also known as The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum, was painted by Van Gogh in Arles, France, mid-September 1888. Visitors to the site can still stand at the northeastern corner of the Place du Forum, where the artist set up his easel towards the artificially lit terrace of the popular coffee house, with the darkness of the rue du Palais leading up to the building and the tower of a former church (now Musee Lapidaire). It was the first painting in which Van Gogh featured his now famous Starry Night Sky.
