This morning I saw the country from my window a long time before sunrise, with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big," Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo, from France. Rooted in imagination and memory, The Starry Night embodies an inner, subjective expression of Van Gogh's response to nature. In thick, sweeping brushstrokes, a flame like cypress unites the churning sky and the quiet village below from his window at the at Saint Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Remy, France. The village was partly invented, and the church spire evokes van Gogh's native land, the Netherlands. Van Gogh's Starry Night painting was done in 1889 and is perhaps the most famous and recognizable of his works.

Vincent Van Gogh was born in the Netherlands, 1853 - 1890. Van Gogh spent his early adult life working for a firm of art dealers. After a brief spell as a teacher, he became a missionary worker in a very poor mining region. He did not embark upon a career as an artist until 1880. Most of his best-known works were produced in the final two years of his life. The central figure in Van Gogh's life was his friend and brother Theo who continually and selflessly provided financial support.

I buy neckties for performance situations; we're doing a multi-media production of - among other works - Starry Night (as evoked by Vincent Van Gogh, Don Maclean and Anne Sexton)...and, obviously, my new necktie is perfect for wearing in the show and as a later souvenir of same.
