A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte
Georges-Pierre Seurat (1859 – 1891) was a French Post-Impressionist painter and draftsman. After he completed his art schooling he began developing painting techniques known as chromoluminarism and pointillism. The tiny juxtaposed dots of multi-colored paint allow the viewer's eye to blend colors optically, rather than having the colors physically blended on the canvas. In spite of his early death, Seurat's system of color harmony became popular with French artists and the movement came to be know as Neo-Impressionism. "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" is perhaps Seurat's most famous painting. It took over 2 years for Seurat to complete it. He reworked the original as well as completed numerous preliminary drawings and oil sketches where he concentrated on colour, light, and form. The painting is quite large, approximately 7 by 10 feet in size, and currently hangs in the Chicago Museum of Art.
