Gustav Klimt 1862 - 1918
Gustav Klimt was an Austrian symbolist painter, whose primary subject was the female body. The Virgin painting was done in 1913 and is rich in fantasy and symbolism. The virgin's gown which is configured with many spirals metaphorically indicates fertility, continual change and the evolution of the universe. Wrapped in a circular form, the other women are entwined with the Virgin, perhaps sleeping or resting with her. This erotic work, one of the central pieces of Klimt's allegorical paintings can be seen in the National Gallery in Prague, the Czech Republic.
