Rene Magritte was born in 1898 in Belgium. He began drawing lessons at age ten, and in 1916, went to study a the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. His first works were impressionistic but he did not find the academy inspiring and soon left. He began his painting career after serving in the Belgian infantry for a short time, and working at a wallpaper company as a draftsman and producing advertising posters. Magritte was given the opportunity in 1926 to paint full time with a contract from a gallery in Brussels. It was then that he produced his first surreal painting which was not well received. Disillusioned, he moved to Paris and became involved in the surrealist group. When his gallery closed in 1929 he moved back to Brussels. During World War II he made his living working with his brother producing advertising posters and forgeries of paintings by Picasso and other artists. It wasn't until 1948 that he returned to the style and themes of his prewar surrealistic art. Magritte enjoyed his remaining years as a successful artist and died in 1967 in Brussels at the age of 68.
