Claude Monet, French Impressionist Painter, 1840-1926
Monet was born in Paris France. He is considered one of the forefathers of the painting style known as Impressionism. His early art career was boosted by his success as a caricature artist in which he did quite well. He later became involved with his own style and palette of colors and paints primarily landscapes. Ten years after moving to Giverny in 1883, Monet envisioned turning a small pond on an adjacent parcel of land into an Asian influenced water garden. Overcoming the resistance of locals wary of introducing foreign plants into the region, he won approval to expand the pond by diverting water from the Epte River. He encircled the pond with an arrangement of flowers, trees, and bushes, and filled it with water lilies. Later he added a Japanese style wood bridge. This pond was an inspiration for many of his paintings for the remainder of his life.
