Gustav Klimt
Gustav Klimt was an Austrian symbolist painter, whose primary subject was the female body. Born in 1862 he was one of 7 children with 2 of his brothers also becoming artists. Gustav studied at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts along with his brother Ernst. While he enjoyed fame as a mural painter, he also was criticized for the radical and symbolic paintings which were to to decorate the ceiling of the Great Hall of the University of Vienna. That was his last commissioned work. Klimt became a founding member and president of the Vienna Secession which exhibited unconventional art in many forms. "The Kiss" was done in 1907-1908 in what is referred to as his "Golden Period". This striking painting is believed to be of both he and his life companion Emilie Louise Floge who was a clothing designer. This famous work is composed of oil paint with applied layers of gold leaf, an aspect that gives it its strikingly modern, yet evocative appearance. The painting is now in the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere museum in the Belvedere palace, Vienna, and is widely considered a masterpiece of the early modern period and perhaps his most famous work.
