Vincent Van Gogh was born in the Netherlands, 1853 - 1890. Van Gogh spent his early adult life working for a firm of art dealers. After a brief spell as a teacher, he became a missionary worker in a very poor mining region. He did not embark upon a career as an artist until 1880. Most of his best-known works were produced in the final two years of his life. The central figure in Van Gogh's life was his friend and brother Theo who continually and selflessly provided financial support.

Van Gogh painted many still life paintings especially after he moved to Paris from the Netherlands. Part of this was due to his economic situation as he often could not afford to pay for models. Still Life with Roses and Sunflowers was an earlier painting when he used more traditional dark backgrounds. He eventually began to experiment with color theory and his later still lifes have very colorful backgrounds.
