Claude Monet, French Impressionist Painter, 1840-1926
Monet was born in Paris France. He is considered one of the forefathers of the painting style known as Impressionism. His early art career was boosted by his success as a caricature artist in which he did quite well. He later became involved with his own style and palette of colors and paints primarily landscapes.
Wild Poppies, near Argenteuil was painted in 1873. Monet had recently moved to Argenteuil where he lived until 1878. The Mother and Child in the painting are thought to be Monet’s wife Camille, and their son Jean. These years were a time of fulfillment and a period when Monet’s plein air painting style would truly develop. This particular painting, which is characterized by the contrast of greens and reds, was shown at the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874; it has become one of the world's most famous works of art.
